Childhood misconceptions- a tag

I was pulling my hair out in frustration staring at legal texts and decided to give it a break. Nothing can be more relaxing than random bloghopping, skimming through posts and then coming across something that really strikes you. I discovered Pepper’s post this afternoon and this is a very interesting tag. I’m not waiting for the niceties of being tagged and all that.

Here goes, my list of childhood misconceptions

1) Babies are made only when thunder strikes

Bollywood movies are to blame for this. A guy and a girl in a room, lightning and thunder, the girl gets scared, hugs the guy and lights go off. Next scene in the ‘lady doctor’s clinic’ where the lady says, ‘Aap Ma bannevaali hai’. There must have been a zillion scenes like this in every Hindi movie those days.

2) How will I die

I always feared I’ll die coz of a lethal  snakebite. My ancestral home in Trichur is located in what was once a ‘Sarpakaavu’ and some ruthless older cousins made me believe that I live under the curse of the snake gods or something.

3) Lump sum grant- They determine whether you are SC/ST through blood tests

Once in a while, the peon used to call out the names of certain students and send them to the School Office to collect what was called the lump sum grant. It was the fancy name that caught my attention first. On further prodding, Amma told me it is given to people who belong to SC/ST. She had no way of explaining what that meant to a 7 year old. And my next doubt was, do they determine whether one is SC/ST through blood tests?

4) Nuns were the wives of priests 😀

5) Bangarappa was a superhero

S.Bangarappa was the CM of Karnataka in the early 90s. His name was sprawled all across the newspapers and television and my little brain actually deciphered that, he was someone who had come to save the world.

I’m leaving this tag open to anybody who wants to do it. Walk down the memory lane once again and amuse yourself 🙂

Tag again!

Hari, tagged me with this one… honestly, a hopeless unromantic like me can’t do justice to this one.

I won’t wait till mid 30’s.

5. Will you fall in love with your best friend?

Was that a question to break my friendship and scare my best friend?

Till my orientations change, it’s impossible.

Only if… blessedness could be measured with love !!!

7. How long do you intend to wait for someone you love?

19. Your all time favourite song. Only ONE. And why?

Yanni’s Santorini… Why… I don’t know how to explain it in words!

Silverine who s recovering from a partial flash induced trauma tagged me with this one.

The rules are as follows:

Jot down 5 of your favorite quotes from the various books (like others I’m extending it to movies too) you’ve read. If you don’t have the books with you now, googling (Wikiquotes and the like) can be used to find them. Tag five people and acknowledge the person who tagged you.

I’m not much of a quotes person and most of the philosophical , complicated language( rather misplacing the subjects and objects to pry upon your grey cells) or what you call brainy quotes go way above my head when I’m not in the mood to think. Sorry pals, time is a big constraint these days. I’m just posting few which are my personal favs and more or less relate to me.

1) “Whatever you are, be a good one.” – Abraham Lincoln

2) I’m always saying “Glad to’ve met you” to somebody I’m not at all glad I met. If you want to stay alive, you have to say that stuff, though. – J.D Salinger ‘Catcher in the Rye’

3) Hey dad, you wanna hear something funny? There was a man who was drowning, and a boat came, and the man on the boat said “Do you need help?” and the man said “God will save me”. Then another boat came and he tried to help him, but he said “God will save me”, then he drowned and went to Heaven. Then the man told God, “God, why didn’t you save me?” and God said “I sent you two boats, you dummy” – The Pursuit of Happyness

4) “The hardest thing to explain is the glaringly evident which everybody has decided not to see.” – Ayn Rand ( I can see this lady is a common factor in everyone’s list of quotes… she is the best)

5) I find my life is a lot easier the lower I keep everyone’s expectations. – Calvin (this perfectly describes my mood at the moment)

I’m leaving this tag open!

The 5 Step Anger therapy

I took this tag from Jina and as she said, this is a real therapy! I found the tag just at the right time when I was in one of those I want to tear the world apart, I’m so frustrated…moods

Disclaimer: Views expressed in the tag are particularly pointed at certain people around me. I am sure you do pop-in here to enquire about my dire-straits (you wished!)… I hope you get the message at least from this…
And people who don’t know me… This blog is something like my personal diary.

The rules are simple – you just need to list 5 categories of people whom you hate and why.

1. Stupid or rather silly girls…despo’s should be a better word.

Though this statement slanders my own species, I can’t help it. Few of them come across as really desperate girls. Trust me, I found many characters like this…they give their hearts out ( the brain goes as a free offer), blabber about how beautiful it is when you are in love, things go wrong after sometime..then it’s the mending a broken heart phase till they fall for another eye-candy.
They just can’t get their priorities right! I strongly feel girls like this are an insult to womanhood. I hold a strong contempt against girls who choose to end their lives for the sake of a failed relationship. Who is more important? A random guy you know for a few years or months OR your parents who have been with you throughout?

2. People who can’t think beyond “I-me-myself”

A life worth living, only for yourself is totally meaningless. I can’t stand people who live in total oblivion as if nothing else matters but, them. Human nature has selfishness inherent in it, but when it crosses limits, it annoys me. I wouldn’t ask people to be saintly and all that, but even when it comes to your immediate significant others, friends, neighbours… some amount of concern would make things much better.

3. People who make me feel the relation I share with them is an obligation… be it friendship, an acquaintance or familial ties. I think that states the obvious and no explanations are required here.

4. People who take advantage of my submissiveness or silence. Some people think they can trample upon me like a door-mat and have their way. I think I myself am to blame for this situation , but I really hate people who know this and take me for granted. I’ve experienced this more at the hands of close friends and relatives who know that, I can’t say a NO to them.

5. The blame-gamers

It is always easy to blame others. Even though you realize you’re wrong, you’re in a desperate attempt to find the smallest of reasons, where you can pass on the blame to others… But, how long will you lie to yourself or your conscience?

Take this up when you’re in a really bad mood! It helps… cheers.

Silverine tagged me and here goes my first take at a tag. As a disobedient tagee this comes a bit late…
I swear all the answers are best to my knowledge and the most honest answers I can give.

1. LAST MOVIE YOU SAW IN A THEATER: “Taare Zameen Par”. Bolo wi-fi and youtube zindabad. Saved a lot of money( does not mean I’m stingy!)

2. WHAT BOOK ARE YOU READING? The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri. Considering the fact that I have my exams coming up, my course books have been excavated and I’m trying to read them.

3. FAVORITE BOARD GAME? Chess if it is considered to be one. This sudden love for the game arose the other day, when I won a game for the first time. The opponent being a 8 year old kid ( Also, I taught her the game :P, sometimes being mean feels good)

4. FAVORITE MAGAZINE? Frontline, Business World, Outlook, Marie Claire, Reader’s Digest. When I started to learn Malayalam, Vanitha used to be a hot fav( even if I couldn’t understand half the stuff in it). With passing time, I’ve become mature enough and the magazine has become useless :P.

5. FAVORITE SMELLS? The smell after the first rains… I like the smell of petrol, turpentine, kerosene 😛 . ( don’t get ideas, people!!!), Jasmine and the smell of ripe jackfruit and mangoes.

6. FAVORITE SOUND? The sound of the grand-piano, the sound of streams or rivers flowing, the sound that babies make when they giggle.

7. WORST FEELING IN THE WORLD? When you feel you’ve lost all your self-respect.

8. WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU THINK OF WHEN YOU WAKE? Till last week it used to be ,” Oh God! I hope there is water in the hostel today”. Now it is,” Isn’t it a bit too early to wake up”.

9. FAVORITE FAST FOOD PLACE? Bobby ka Dhaba near Ulsoor. Cheap, reasonable and delicious food. Love their butter-milk.
In Trivandrum it has always been the thattukadas.

10. FUTURE CHILD’S NAME? Deepti., That’s what my mom wanted to name me. I’ll give them simple names, that can be spelt properly. I had enough trouble with that already.

11. FINISH THIS STATEMENT. “IF I HAD A LOT OF MONEY I’D be as clueless as I am now, to give an answer

12. DO YOU DRIVE FAST? I did. Back in 2001, I was in class 9 or so, I was learning to drive. Was trying my driving skills in a football ground. I sped and like one of these, I crashed into the goal post. It is by God’s grace that I’m alive to recollect the story of antics and that I escaped from being blinded by an inch . Since, then your’s truly is careful.

13. DO YOU SLEEP WITH A STUFFED ANIMAL? Used to, till the age of 2. A teddy-bear named Ponnan, until I tore him apart to vent my frustration.

15. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CAR? Maruti 800.

16. FAVORITE DRINK? Coffee, Sambharam, Thenga vellam. I’ve started hating fruit juices after my bout of jaundice and over-dose of juices

Kothamangalam, Bangalore, Trivandrum, Hyderabad

She’s currently my stress-buster. Her blogs are addictive.

The unopened Carton, containing my good old Yamaha PSR-GX75. In the packing and unpacking confusions, my parents forgot to get the adapter. I’m waiting to lay my hands on it. Now, if it is about my bed in home away from home, everything I wanna hide from public view and whatever wouldn’t fit in my cup-board are lying safe underneath the bed.

24. WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE BORN AS YOURSELF AGAIN? Yes! but not as the only child

25. MORNING PERSON, OR NIGHT OWL? Night Owl when the mosquitoes give me company in home away from home, and the fan refuses to move an inch, forget about circular motion.
Morning person, only when I’ve got to attend the compulsory weekday mass in hostel.

26.OVER EASY, OR SUNNY SIDE UP? Anything will do… I love eggs.

27. FAVORITE PLACE TO RELAX? Haven’t figured that out in my new abode. Didn’t have much of a choice in campus coz the good ol BBC ( basket ball court)is gone now.
